We’ve all heard the saying, “Getting there is half the fun.” As you gear up for your next travel nurse assignment, let’s dive into how to turn your road trip into an epic adventure. At Wayward Medical Staffing, we know that travel nursing road trips are a bit different from your typical cross-country jaunt. So, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of planning your journey.

Step #1: Map Out Your Time

First things first, figure out how much time you’ve got for your road trip. Give yourself enough leeway to explore and soak in the sights. The last thing you want is a tight schedule that keeps you from enjoying the journey. A good rule of thumb? Aim for about 400 miles a day or 6-8 hours of driving. This gives you plenty of time to rest, grab a bite, and take in those spontaneous roadside attractions.

Step #2: Plan Your Route with Flexibility

Flexibility is your best friend on a road trip. Sure, have a basic route in mind, especially if you’re on a tight timeline. But also be open to detours and local recommendations. Ask hotel staff or locals about hidden gems along your route. You’d be surprised at what you can discover off the beaten path.

Here are some great resources to help you find fun things to do all over the country:

  • Roadside America: This site lists quirky Route 66-type attractions searchable by state or route.
  • TripIt: A handy tool to plan and share your road trip itinerary.
  • AAA: Great for maps, attractions, and service areas.
  • Travel Nurse Community: Tap into the wisdom of fellow travel nurses who’ve been there, done that.

Even in the age of GPS and smartphones, don’t forget to carry a paper map. It’s a great backup and might reveal interesting spots that digital maps miss.

Before you hit the road, make sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape. Check all the essentials, especially if you plan on hiking or outdoor activities.

Step #3: Embrace the Journey

This one’s simple but crucial: enjoy the ride. Your attitude can make or break your road trip experience. Be prepared for things to go off-script, and remember, those unexpected moments often make the best stories.

Here’s a fun road trip disaster turned fond memory from one of our Travelers:

“I once drove from Denver to Portland with my best friend, and halfway through, our car’s transmission gave out in a remote mountain town. We were stuck with no cell service and limited supplies. Instead of panicking, we explored the local area, stumbled upon a charming old diner, and ended up spending the day with the friendly locals while the car was being fixed, sharing stories and homemade pie. What was a setback became a highlight of our trip—proof that sometimes the best adventures come from unexpected detours.”
