Yeehaw, partner! If you’re reading this, you’ve lassoed all the previous steps and are ready to saddle up for your travel nurse assignment. It’s an exciting, sometimes nerve-wracking journey, but with the right prep, you’ll be set for a smooth ride.

10 Steps to Get Ready for Your Travel Nurse Assignment

1. Tending to Your Homestead

Are you renting out your home, leaving it empty, or having a friend stay over? Maybe you’re ending a lease. Whatever your plan, make sure your primary residence is sorted. Remember, there are tax implications if you’re travel nursing without a primary residence.

2. Banking Business

Before you hit the trail, check what your bank allows and doesn’t when it comes to traveling. Does your bank operate where you’re headed? Are there fees for out-of-network transactions? Notify your bank you’ll be traveling to avoid any holds on your account. Keep a backup credit card or savings account handy for emergencies.

3. Mobile Coverage

Check your mobile provider’s coverage in your new location. You might need your phone’s hotspot more often in temporary housing. Ensure your plan covers it.

4. Personal Portfolio

We’ve talked about building your Travel Nurse Portfolio. Have backup copies (paper or electronic) of essential documents:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Insurance Cards (auto, life, home, etc.)
  • Passport (if applicable)
  • Work Visa (if applicable)
  • Health Information/prescriptions

5. Mail on the Move

Avoid a mail pile-up by arranging mail forwarding or having someone pick it up and forward it. The USPS offers free mail forwarding for a limited time, and there are paid services for longer durations.

6. Vehicle Check

If you’re driving, ensure your vehicle is road-trip ready. Visit a local mechanic to check the oil, fluids, belts, etc. If you’re storing your vehicle, prepare it for storage and find a secure facility.

7. Health Insurance

Schedule any necessary doctor appointments before you leave. If you’re taking company insurance, be aware of any waiting periods. Consider these details while prepping for your first assignment.

8. Medications

Ensure you have enough refills for any required medications. Let your physician know you’ll be out of state and get extra refills if needed.

9. Pet Prep

Traveling with your furry friend? Make sure their vaccines are up-to-date and carry their health records for boarding, daycare, or leasing requirements. If you’re headed to Hawaii or abroad, check specific pet importation laws well in advance.

10. Secure Your Valuables

Whether you’re storing your belongings or leaving them behind, secure your valuables. Safety deposit boxes are great for paperwork and small items. Larger items can be stored with trusted friends or family or in an insured storage facility. Consider travel insurance to cover personal belongings and provide additional medical coverage when far from home.

Getting ready for your travel nurse assignment can feel like preparing for a rodeo, but with these steps, you’ll be ready to ride off into your next big adventure. Happy trails, and may your journey be as smooth as a well-trodden path! 🌵🏥
