Travel Nurse Packing List Tips
Make a Checklist of What You Use Regularly
Think about what you use daily or weekly. Can you live without it? Can one item serve multiple purposes?
Make it Feel Like Home
Pack something that reminds you of home, like photos, a favorite pair of pajamas, or a small trinket.
Organize
Stay organized to make packing and unpacking easier. Set limits on what you take. For example, if your “housewares” tote is full, decide what to leave behind to close the box.
Hospital Uniform Requirements
Scrub colors might change with each assignment, but keep it simple. You probably only need 3-4 sets of scrubs since you’ll work about three shifts per week.
Clothing
Slim down your wardrobe. Choose multi-functional, color-coordinated clothing. For example, a summer skirt that pairs with leggings, a sweater, and boots can be worn in the fall too.
Luxury Items
Don’t forget about you! Pick one or two luxury items. It could be a nice pillow, a blanket, or a high-end electronic or gaming system. You can’t take everything but ensure you feel happy and content on assignment.
Hobbies
Bring essential equipment for hobbies or activities you love. If you enjoy camping, pack a pared-down camping kit. Having these items will let you enjoy your free time.
Other Travel Nurse Packing List Items
Remember, your contract is typically about 13 weeks. Packing doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Pack the essentials, but don’t feel like you have to bring everything.
If you plan to go from one contract to the next without heading home, re-evaluate your packing at the end of each contract. If you missed something, pack it next time. If you brought something you never used, leave it behind.
What you take is personal. Learning what you need and how to pack it is an art you’ll master over time.
